Over the course of an eclectic career in drama, cinema and music that ranged the gamut from The Holy Modal Rounders to Black Hawk Down, Sam Shepard received the 1979 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Buried Child and was a nominated finalist for the award in 1983 (True West) and 1984 (Fool for Love). Writing on behalf of the panel, 1979 Drama jury chair Brendan Gill lauded Shepard's "lyrically [exuberant]" and "exceptionally entertaining" exploration of "the moral and spiritual values to which as Americans we continue to subscribe."

In honor of his life, today we publish the 1979, 1983 and 1984 Drama jury reports.
