The Capital Gazette published a newspaper this morning, reporting on what the authorities say was a targeted shooting of five of their colleagues the previous afternoon.
The Baltimore Sun, which employed one of the victims, Rob Hiaasen, for 15 years, lent support to the effort, and journalists at news organizations across America offered condolences and voiced support as staffers worked through the tragedy.
Last night, reporter Chase Cook tweeted: "I can tell you this: We are putting out a damn paper tomorrow."
Cook and his colleagues did so without five of their own. Assistant editor and columnist Hiaasen, reporter Wendi Williams, reporter and editor John McNamara, editorial writer Gerald Fischman and sales assistant Rebecca Smith lost their lives. The suspect harbored a long-running feud with the paper.
Journalists from across the country, including at rival publications, demonstrated support by sharing messages, subscribing to the Capital Gazette and contributing to a Go Fund Me account for victims' families.
