The annual Hosting Young Philosophy Enthusiasts (HYPE) conference brought together 1,000 high school students from across New Hampshire to discuss censorship and freedom of expression. Students led Socratic seminars at University of New Hampshire-Durham, in an event sponsored by New Hampshire Humanities as part of the Pulitzer Centennial Campfires Initiative.
The students asked: "To what extent is freedom of speech influenced by power, control and fear?"
Following about seven minutes on the history, growth and aims of the conference, this video shows how the debate unfolded — with Pulitzer-winning political cartoons by Joel Pett creating fodder for the discussion.
The Pulitzer Prize Centennial Campfires Initiative is a joint venture with the Federation of State Humanities Council. The initiative seeks to focus on journalism and the humanities, to imagine their future and to inspire new generations to consider the values represented by Pulitzer Prize-winning work.
We invite you to start a campfire of your own. Many schools, libraries and other organizations — like HYPE — already have done so. Pulitzer provides no financial aid for such projects but will help with publicity and coverage on this site and through social media.
