The recent attack on Salman Rushdie was an outrageous assault both on the man and on the principles of free speech and artistic freedom. As a novelist, Rushdie is a master; as a spokesman for liberty, he has been unflinching despite a fatwa issued by one ayatollah, in 1989, and endorsed by his successor. The Pulitzer Board hopes Mr. Rushdie will have a strong recovery and stands with him in his defense of tolerance, free minds, and the free word.
