Brian Gleason, former editorial page editor of Sun Newspapers in Charlotte Harbor, Fla, has been added to the newspaper’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize-winning entry in Editorial Writing. The prize now goes to Gleason and John Hackworth, the newspapers’ editor.

After the prizes were announced on Monday, Gleason notified editors at Sun Newspapers that he believed he had written some of the unsigned editorials in the winning entry. Sun editors said that a check of the newspaper’s electronic library confirmed that of the eight editorials in the entry, Hackworth had written five and Gleason three.
Executive Editor Chris Porter, who wrote the initial entry letter, informed the Pulitzer office of the error.
Omitting Gleason’s name from the entry “was an honest mistake, but one we should not have made, and one we hope you will help us correct,” he wrote.
Gleason left the Sun last August to become communications manager for Charlotte County government. He worked for the paper for 26 years, including two stints as editorial page editor.
On this website, Gleason’s name now appears with Hackworth’s as joint winners. The Sun’s letter requesting the addition is appended to the original entry letter.
Both writers will be honored on Oct. 13 when the prizes are awarded at a Pulitzer centennial dinner at Columbia University’s Low Library.
