The 2022 Pulitzer Prize Awards Ceremony

The 2022 class of Pulitzer Prize winners gathered at Columbia University's Low Library on October 20 for a dinner ceremony celebrating their awards. Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger, 2021-2022 Pulitzer Prize Board Co-Chair John Daniszewski and Pulitzer Prize Administrator Marjorie Miller presided.

In her opening remarks, Miller singled out ongoing threats to democracy, while Daniszewski noted the conspicuous absence of 2022 Feature Photography winner Sanna Irshad Mattoo, who was stopped from traveling to New York to receive her award by immigration authorities in New Delhi. He characterized the decision as "petty, highly discriminatory [...] and emblematic of the challenges journalists face around the world." One of Mattoo's teammates, 2018 Feature Photography contributor Danish Siddiqui, died in crossfire between Taliban and Afghan security forces in July 2021, leaving his children to accept the posthumous award on his behalf.

Amid these challenges, President Bollinger — who will step down from the role at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year after more than two decades of concurrent service on the Pulitzer Board — offered a sanguine reflection on his tenure. "Throughout this entire time, this experience has been a joy," he said. "It has been a window into the world at its most hopeful."
