Winning Work

This photograph of a young girl kneeling over the body of Jeffrey Miller, one of four students killed, was carried on the front pages of hundreds of newspapers throughout the U.S. and the world. It became a symbol of college protest in our country. The impact of the photograph is immeasurable even today. - from the entry letter.

Biography

John Paul Filo was born Aug. 21, 1948, to John and Mary Jane Filo at Natrona Heights, Pa. He graduated from the Harrison Township public school system.

At Har-Brack High School John was editor of the yearbook. The following summer he began as intern photographer at The Valley Daily News and Daily Dispatch in neighboring Tarentum. He enrolled at Kent State in pre-dental. After the second year he transfered to a photo-illustration major.

He was married Dec. 26, 1971, to Marge Emerson of Natrona Heights.
